Incorporated in 1895, Riverside Township is in Burlington County, New Jersey, bordering Delanco Township and Delran Township. Settlement of the area began when William Newbold was awarded five hundred and fifty acres of land in a settlement against landowner William Griffin in 1824. He sold one hundred and sixty acres to Joseph Pearson, who built a small house along the railroad tracks, later leaving his property to his son, Samuel Pearson, who sold it to Samuel Bechtold, who developed it into a resort town.
