Originally incorporated as Midland Township in 1871, its name was changed to Rochelle Park in 1929 in order to avoid confusion with the nearby borough of Midland Park. Rochelle Park was named for the La Rochelle, France. The area was first inhabited by the Lenape and, more specifically, the Hackensack tribe. After a brief peace between the Hackensacks and the Dutch, hostilities broke out, and peace was not restored until 1658. The New Jersey township is bordered by Lodi, Maywood, Paramus, and Saddle Brook.
