Rumson was purchased by English settlers from Native Americans, beginning around 1663, when the area was known as Navarumsunk, which was later shortened to Rumson. Other names that the community has been known by include Black Point, Port Washington, and Oceanic. Rumson was incorporated as a borough in 1907. Once a summer vacation colony for wealthy New Yorkers, Rumson is now an upscale suburb of New York City, situated along the shores of the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers.
