Rutherford was incorporated as a borough in 1881, although it was settled as early as 1687 by Walling Van Winkle and, before that, was inhabited by the Lenapes. Initially, the area that is now Rutherford was part of New Barbadoes Township, and later became part of Union Township. Rutherford has also been known as the Borough of Trees and the First Borough of Bergen County.
