Saddle River Township was created in 1716, at which time it consisted of everything in Bergen County west of the Saddle River, but it was split up in 1772, with the northern part of the township becoming Franklin Township. Later, other portions of the township were taken to form other townships and boroughs. In 1955, the township was renamed Saddle Brook.
