Formed by Royal Charter from parts of Walpack Township in 1762, Sandyston was incorporated as one of New Jersey’s initial group of townships in 1798. Situated near the northwestern part of the state, near New Jersey’s border with Pennsylvania, Sandyston is in Sussex County. Unincorporated communities within the township include Layton and Hainesville.
