After the Native Americans, the area that was to become Scotch Plains was settled by Scottish Quakers as early as 1684, later serving as a stagecoach stop between New York and Philadelphia. The Battle of Short Hills took place largely in the Ash Swamp in Scotch Plains on June 26, 1777. The community was initially incorporated as Fanwood Township in 1878, and was renamed Scotch Plains in 1917.
