Sea Bright, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, was incorporated as a borough in 1889. The area that was to become Sea Bright was settled in the early 1840s. At that time, it was a fishing community of simple shacks known as Nauvoo, thought to have been named by the Mormon leader, Joseph Smith, who was there in 1840. Today, Sea Bright has seven members-only beach clubs, as well as a large public, municipal beach in the center of town, and a surfing beach known as the Anchorage, which is also public.
