The borough of Sea Girt, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, was incorporated in 1917, formed from portions of Wall Township. Sea Girt is bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by Manasquan, on the north by Spring Lake Heights, and on the west by Blansingburg. Originally, the area was farmland owned by Dr. Charles Montrose Graham and Mr. John Sherman. A large tract of land was purchased by Commodore Robert F. Stockton in 1853, but a community did not develop there until 1875, when a group of land developers from Philadelphia bought the property.
