Founded in 1882 by Charles K. Landis, Sea Isle was originally incorporated as a borough, becoming a city in 1907. Situated on Ludlam Island, in Cape May County, New Jersey, Sea Isle City has been hit by several major hurricanes and storms during its history. After the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962, in which nearly every beach front home was badly damaged or destroyed, a dune line was formed, which required beach front businesses and homes to move back from the shoreline an average of one block. The Strathmere section of Upper Township is also located on Ludlam Island.
