Originally incorporated as a borough in 1886, Somers Point was reincorporated as a city in 1902. Prior to its incorporation, Somers Point was known as the Somerset Plantation, which was settled around 1693. Somers Point was designated as a port of entry in 1791, and remained such until 1915. The city is in the eastern portion of Atlantic County, southwest of Atlantic City. The 1983 move, “Eddie and the Cruisers,” was filmed in Somers Point, which used the now defunct Tony Mart’s nightclub as its primary setting.
