Originally incorporated as a town in 1863, Somerville became a borough in 1909, serving as the seat of Somerset County. Somerville borders the Raritan River to the south. The community was settled in colonial times by the Dutch, who established a church at what is now downtown Somerville, and the town grew up around the church. George Washington spent a winter in Somerville during the Revolutionary War. The actor, athlete and civil right activist, Paul Robeson, was a native of Somerville.
