Formed by Royal Charter in 1750, Stafford was incorporated as one of New Jersey’s initial group of townships in 1798, becoming part of Ocean County in 1850. Unincorporated community within Stafford Township include Beach Haven West and Manahawkin, while Ocean Acre and Warren Grove are located partially within the township. Stafford is the gateway to the resort communities on Long Beach Island, with Route 72 providing the only access by road.
