The borough of Stockton was formed from portions of Delaware Township in 1898. Stockton is located along the Delaware River, at the western end of the Amwell Valley in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Before it became Stockton, the community was known as Reading Ferry, Howell’s Ferry, and Centre Bridge Station, becoming Stockton when a post office was created there in 1851. Stockton is bordered by Delaware Township. The Centre Bridge-Stockton Bridge, over the Delaware River, connects Delaware with Pennsylvania.
