Settled by Peter Decker in 1742, the borough of Sussex, New Jersey was incorporated as Deckertown in 1891, formed from portions of Wantage. It was renamed Sussex in 1902. In 2009, efforts to reunite the two communities, forming the Township of Sussex-Wantage, were rejected when Wantage voters rejected the proposed merger. Sussex is located in Sussex County.
