Before 1900, the area that is now Tabernacle was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape. In 1778, John and David Brainerd built a church there, to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. The church became known as Tabernacle in the Wilderness. In 1856, a one-room school was built there and, as the community grew, another school was built, then other buildings. In the 1880s, the Tabernacle Methodist Church was built to replace the original church. Tabernacle was incorporated as a township in 1901, and is part of Burlington County, New Jersey.
