The borough of Tenafly is in Bergen County. The first European settlers in the area were the Dutch, who came in the late 1600s, and its name is derived from the Dutch phrase, Tiene Vly, which means Ten Swamps. The community was incorporated in 1894. The borough’s development and street plan were determined by its hills and valleys. Tenafly is southeast of Bergenfield and south of Cresskill. Notable residents or natives of Tenafly include Yogi Berra, Jimmy Dean, and Edie Adams.
