Located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, the area of Tinton Falls was settled in the late 1600s, and the community that grew up there was known as New Shrewsbury, founded by James Grover, who built an ironworks there. His holdings became known as Tintern Manor, later shortened to Tinton, which were the basis for the borough’s name. In 1950, Tinton Falls and Wayside separated from Shrewsbury Township, becoming the borough of New Shrewsbury, which was changed to Tinton Falls in 1975, named for the highest waterfall on the New Jersey coastal plain, which is located within the borough.
