The City of Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and the seat of Mercer County. The area that was to become Trenton was first settled by Quakers in 1679, and by 1719, the town had adopted the name Trent-towne, after William Trent, one of the community’s leading landowners. Its name was alter shortened to Trenton. The city was the site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Trenton, General Washington’s first military victory. After the war, Trenton was briefly the capital of the United States. Trenton became the state capital in 1790, and the city was formed within Trenton Township in 1792. The township was dissolved in 1837, becoming part of the city.
