Upper Pittsgrove was formed from portions of the township of Pittsgrove in 1846. The New Jersey township is bordered by Alloway Township, Elmer, Pilesgrove Township, and Pittsgrove Township, as well as Cumberland County and Gloucester County. Monroeville is an unincorporated town spanning Upper Pittsgrove and Elk Township. Upper Pittsgrove is a dry town, where alcohol cannot be sold, although alcohol is available at a winery within the township. State Route 77, US Route 40, County Route 553, and County Route 581 run through the township.
