Wallington was created as a borough in 1895, from parts of the townships of Bergen and Saddle River. The borough is located in the southern corner of Bergen County, about fifteen miles northwest of midtown Manhattan. European settlers first arrived in the area in 1668, when Captain Jon Berry and William Sanford bought land in the region, at which time Wallington was part of New Barbadoes Township, in Essex County. In 1687, Walling Van Winkle bought a large tract of land, building a house there, becoming the growing community’s namesake.
