The Borough of Watchung was organized in 1926, although the area was settled in the early 1700s, remaining a rural area until recent years. Its name was derived from a Lenape word, meaning “high hills,” in reference to the Watchung Mountains. Initially the community was known as Washingtonville, but that name was rejected by the postal service, which felt that New Jersey already had too many municipalities named Washington. The Stony Brook flows through the borough, from Warren Township to the Watchung Lake, then through a gorge in the mountain, over the Wetumpka Falls, merging with Green Brook.
