Incorporated in 1846, when Amwell Township was split, creating East Amwell Township at the same time, West Amwell Township is in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The northern part of the township is in Amwell Valley, while the southern part is in the Sourlands region. West Amwell is separated from Pennsylvania by the Delaware River. Route 29 passes through the southwestern part of the township, but roads connect Route 29 with the heart of the township. Route 31 is along the eastern border of East and West Amwell, while Route 179 and US Route 202 pass through and around northwestern part of the township. CR 518 and CR 579 go through the county.
