The township of West Orange is in central Essex County, New Jersey. The township is marked by two large parks: the South Mountain Reservation is located along its southwestern borders with Maplewood and Millburn, and the Eagle Rock Reservation, along the northeastern border of the township, near Montclair and Verona. West Orange Township is comprised of four neighborhoods: Downtown West Orange and The Valley, First Mountain, Pleasant Valley and Pleasantdale, and Second Mountain. Until 1806, West Orange was part of the City of Newark, when Orange Township broke off. West Orange later broke off of Orange Township as Fairmount, which was changed to West Orange in 1862.
