Woolwich Township was formed by Royal Charter in 1767, and incorporated as one of New Jersey’s original group of townships in 1798. Swedesboro, which is surrounded on all sides by Woolwich Township, separated from Woolwich Township in 1902, becoming an independent borough. Portions of the township receive their mail through a Swedesboro address. US Route 322 passes through the center of the township, while the New Jersey Turnpike crosses the southeastern part of the township. County roads passing through Woolwich include CR 538 and CR 551.
