This settlement along the banks of the Pecos River was first known as the Town of Eddy, which was organized as a municipality in 1893. Due to the mineral springs north of town, its name was changed to Carlsbad, after the famous European spa, Karlsbad. Carlsbad became a city in 1918. It is the seat of Eddy County, New Mexico. The town gained international recognition with the discovery of the "Bat Cave" in 1901 and the establishment of the Carlsbad National Park in 1930.
