The village of Cloudcroft, New Mexico is in Otero County, and within the Lincoln National Forest. Like many other towns, its origins are related to the railroad. In the 1890s, the railroad extended its line into the Sacramento Mountains in order to harvest the forests, and a tourist settlement resulted. Alamogordo is west of Cloudcroft, and Roswell and Ruidoso are northeast of the village.
