Clovis, the seat of Curry County, is located in the Llano Estacado, in the eastern part of New Mexico. The community was founded in 1906, when the Santa Fe Railroad was built through the area, and the location was chosen as a town site. First known as Riley’s Switch, it was renamed Clovis when it was incorporated in 1909. In more recent history, Clovis played a part in early rock and roll music, in particular the Norman Petty Studios, where Buddy Holly recorded “Peggy Sue” and other hits.
