Named for the 15th century explorer, Columbus is a village in Luna County, New Mexico. On March 9, 1916, the small border town was attacked by Mexican revolutionaries led by General Francisco “Pancho” Villa, who pillaged and burned its business district. Eighteen Americans, mostly civilians, were killed, along with from seventy to seventy-five Villistas. Columbus is just north of the Mexican town of Puerto Palomas.
