Deming is the seat of Luna County, New Mexico. Until the Gadsden Purchase, extending the borders of the United States in 1853, Deming was a border city, and an important point of entry. The city is named for Mary Ann Deming Crocker, the wife of Charles Crocker, who was a railroad executive. Deming is west of Lac Cruces, east of Lordsburg, and southeast of Silver City and Bayard. The small communities of Waterloo and Columbus are south of Deming.
