The village of Fort Sumner, New Mexico is the home of the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, the alleged burial site of Billy the Kid, and the seat of De Baca County. Established as a military fort, charged with the internment of the nearby Navajo and Mescalero Apache populations from 1863 to 1868, the community was named for Edwin Vose Sumner, former military governor of New Mexico. Fort Sumner is south to southeast of Santa Rosa.
