Located in the center of an agricultural region irrigated by the Rio Grande River, which flows west of the city, Las Cruces is the seat of Dona Ana County, and the second largest city in New Mexico. The first inhabitants of the area were the Manso people, with the Mescalero Apache living nearby. Las Cruces itself was founded in 1849 when the U.S. Army laid out the new town after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceded the land to the United States.
