Las Vegas is the seat of San Miguel County, New Mexico. West Las Vegas and East Las Vegas, separated from one another by the Galinas River, were once separate towns; combined in the 1950s, they have retained separate school districts and distinct characters. Las Vegas (West) was established in 1835 by settlers who received a land grant from the Mexican government, and laid out in the traditional Spanish Colonial style. East Las Vegas came about in 1880, when set up east of Las Vegas.
