Loving, New Mexico is a village in Eddy County, about twelve miles southeast of Carlsbad. The community was first settled by a group of Swiss pioneers who arrived in 1891, naming their settlement Vaud, and a post office was established under that name in 1893. In 1894, the settlement’s name was changed to Florence, but in 1908, the name was changed to Loving, in honor of Oliver Loving, a Texas cowman and trail driver. Loving was incorporated in 1908.
