The seat of Roosevelt County, New Mexico, Portales is located near Clovis and Cannon Air Force Base, which contributes much to the economy of the city. The area was known as Llano Estacado during the Spanish rule of the 17th century. The U.S. territorial settlement of Portales was in the late 19th century when a water source was discovered coming from a rocky ledge that resembled a Spanish porch, and gave it the name Portales, which became a city in 1909.
