Roswell is widely known as the site of what is now called the 1947 Roswell UFO incident, although the crash site of the alleged UFO was nearly seventy-five miles from Roswell. The seat of Chaves County, Roswell is the home of the New Mexico Military Institute, and a center for irrigation, farming, ranching, and petroleum production.
