Situated in the southwestern part of New Mexico, Silver City is the seat of Grant County, and home to Western New Mexico University. The city was originally known as San Vicente de la Ciénega and, prior to its settlement by Europeans, the area served as an Apache campsite. Silver City itself was founded in 1870, shortly after the discovery of silver. Billy the Kid's first two arrests were in Silver City.
