Spanish families traveling north from Mexico in 1598, led by Don Juan de Oñate y Salazar, were fed and aided by the Teypana inhabitants of the area that was to become Soccoro, prompting Oñate to rename the pueblo there Socorro, which means “to give aid to.” The Spanish settled in the area, residing there until 1680, when both they and the Teypanas left to form a new community further south. Socorro was not re-founded as a community until late 1816. Socorro is the seat of Socorro County.
