A New Mexico village and a ski resort, Taos Ski Valley is the highest municipality in the United States. While the village itself is at 9,207 feet, the village limits reach 12,581 feet, and its highest dwelling, Kachina Village, is at 10,350 feet. The community was originally settled by miners in the 1800s, but it became a ski resort in 1955, and an incorporated village in 1996. Its chief industry is tourism, not only during the winter ski season but as a summer destination as well.
