Tucumcari is the seat of Quay County, New Mexico. The city was founded in 1901, after the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built a construction camp in the western portion of what was to become Quay County. Due to frequent gunfights, the camp became known as Six Shooter Siding. As the settlement developed, it was renamed Tucumcari in 1908, the name taken from Tucumcari Mountain.
