Named for the Rio Tularosa, which flows along the north side of the village, Tularosa began to be settled in 1860 but failed, and was successfully founded in 1863 by Hispanic farmers from the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. The community is located at the junction of New Mexico Highways 54 and 70, and situated in the Tularosa Basin, at the base of the Sacramento Mountains. Tularosa is north of Alamogordo, and west of the Lincoln National Forest. It is a part of Otero County, New Mexico.
