Canton is both a town and a village in St. Lawrence County, New York. Established in 1805, Canton was named after Canton, China, and is home to St. Lawrence University. The first settlers arrived in the area around 1800, and the town was organized from part of the town of Lisbon. In 1845, the community of Canton set itself off from the town by incorporating as a village.
