The county seat of Mitchell County, Bakersville is northeast of Bandana and Green Mountain, and on the edge of the Pisgah National Forest. Although there were people in the area as early as 1777, their names are not known. The first recorded settler on the site of what was to be called Bakersville was David Baker, for whom the town was named. Bakersville has been the county seat since 1868, and the town was incorporated in 1870.
