In 1709, a town was established on the site of a former Indian village, previously known as Cwarioc. Robert Turner, a principle owner of the property, had the town surveyed, and gave it the name of Beaufort. The town of Beaufort is the third oldest town in North Carolina, after Bath and New Bern. Beaufort is in North Carolina’s Inner Banks region, and is the seat of Carteret County.
