Located on top of Beech Mountain, for which it is named, one of the higher peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountain Range, Beech Mountain, North Carolina is the highest town east of the Rocky Mountains. Prior to the incorporation of the town in 1981, an amusement park was located in the area. In 1987, Beach Mountain tried unsuccessfully to to secede from Watauga County, citing unfair distribution of tax money. Beech Mountain is southwest of Sugar Grove, and northeast of Cranberry.
