Belmont, North Carolina is in Gaston County, west of uptown Charlotte, and east of Gastonia. Initially known as Garibaldi Station, in 1883 the city was renamed Belmont in honor of August Belmont, a prominent New York banker. Settlement in the area began around the Fort at the Point, built in the 1750s to protect against hostilities with the Cherokee.
