Black Mountain, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County. The first recorded inhabitants of the are were the Cherokee, who were forced out be encroaching European settlers. The town was incorporated in 1893, and named for the old train stop at the Black Mountain Depot, and because of its location in the Black Mountain range of the Southern Appalachians. A road was built through the area in 1850, and a railroad followed in 1879.
