Blowing Rock is situated in the North Carolina counties of Caldwell and Watauga. Prior to the mid-1700s, the area was home to the Cherokee and Catawba tribes. Scots-Irish pioneers began to settle the region after the mid-18th century, the first recorded family being the Greenes. During the Civil War, Blowing Rock served as a refuge from the fighting, as men going to war often sent their families there to keep them safe. The community was incorporated as a town in 1889.
