Calabash is a small fishing town in Brunswick County. The community was named for the gourds that grew in the region, used as drinking containers. Since the 1930s, Calabash has become known for its style of fried seafood, known as Calabash Style, which can be found all along the east coast of North Carolina. Calabash was incorporated in 1973, although a large portion of the town split to form the town of Carolina Shores in 1998. Calabash is situated between Carolina Shores and Sunset Beach.
