Located in Beaufort County, North Carolina, Chocowinity became the railroad hub of the Norfolk Southern Railway in 1910. Around 1917, the railway began referring to the stop as Marsden, as it was easier to spell on a telegraph than Chocowinity, a name that was used alternatively with its official name until the regional rail carrier was acquired by the Southern Railway in the 1970s, and resumed using Chocowinity to designate the location, as telegraphs had been replaced by voice communications.
